The coming year looks to be all about sequels, remakes and tried and true formulas. The good news is, there’s not much coming out that we have to take a chance on. It will be interesting to see if anyone “re-imagined” anything a little differently this time around. At least I wish that Hollywood would bring back originality.
Here are the Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2010:
10). A Couple of Dicks
An action comedy about two cops; what do you think the odds are the cops are black and white? This movie was directed by Kevin Smith- who is known for great dialogue, so a movie with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan could be entertaining. We’ll see.
9). Toy Story 3
Proving that getting stars back for sequels is not as hard as it once was Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are back as Woody and Buzz in Toy Story 3. It will be interesting to see how the TS characters stack up to recent 3D animated movies. Both Hanks and Allen have proven themselves to be tremendous voice talent so the burden of success lies in the animator’s hands.
8). Robin Hood
This is a retelling of the Robin Hood legend from the Gladiator team of Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. This promises some epic battle scenes. Somehow though, the Robin Hood theme never gets old, even though this is something like the 43rd retelling.
7). The Book of Eli
A man fights his way across the war-ravaged countryside of America in order to protect a mysterious book that will somehow save mankind. Okay, I’m willing to bet it’s not Emeril’s cookbook. This might be the most original movie of the year.
6). Date Night
So what happens to married couples when they get tired of each other? They have a date night; and more. What exactly that more is, is unknown. But this movie has Steve Carrel and Tina Fey, so you KNOW it has to be funny.
5). Jonah Hex
In the late 1800s, a Wild West bounty hunter and former Confederate soldier Jonah Hex, attempts to stop a voodoo witch doctor to take him down. The reason? He’s raising an army of zombies. Yes, western comic book hero fighting zombies. It really doesn’t get better than this… unless Megan Fox is there too. Oh WAIT! She is!
4). Iron Man 2
Tony Stark, and Jim Rhodes are at it again. This time they fight Whiplash and the Black Widow. Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury (a choice that is wholly endorsed). In Marvel film this is going to be a centerpiece and a lead into the one of the most hyped movies in years: The Avengers. Don Cheadle takes over the role of Jim Rhodes/War Machine, a controversy we will all be hearing about while coming out of the theater.
3). The Rum Diary
Mostly not sober freelance journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) tries to find the meaning of life while writing for a run-down newspaper in Puerto Rico. For Fear in Las Vegas fans, this is a dream come true. Depp seems to have an affinity for the character of Kemp and it’s no wonder as the offbeat hilarity and nonsensical saga of Paul Kemp continues.
Christopher Nolan could have rested on his laurels after directing Batman Begins, instead he shocked and wowed us all with The Dark Knight. This year he is due to release yet another movie: Inception. There are not really a lot of details out there on this movie, but Nolan’s pedigree is enough to propel this effort to #2.
1). Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
The first part of the conclusion to the Potter series will arrive this summer. Many movie growers have grown up watching the Harry Potter series and the franchise has grown with them by increasing its intensity and adult content without adding gratuitous violence (and certainly no sex) to the mix.
